What’s new with CUCM Version 14?

About Cisco CUCM version 14, we should say generally, Cisco Unified Communication Manager (CUCM) is an enterprise unified communications and collaboration platform that is able to bring connect people together anytime, anywhere, and on any device with Cisco’s integrated collaboration infrastructure for voice and video calling, messaging, and mobility by providing secure, reliable and scalable call and segment management.

It helps you to consolidate your communication infrastructure and allows people and teams to connect simply with CUCM. Also it transforms workspaces by providing extensive features to support mobile and remote workers. Moreover, it scales your organization’s changes and supports the needs of small and midsize businesses through to the largest enterprises with up to 80,000 users.

Furthermore, Cisco Unified (CM) supports industry standards, a wide range of gateways, and a broad ecosystem of third-party integrations and solutions plus partners. This results in a rich collaboration with anyone, anywhere and embedded collaboration in your line-of-business applications.

Recently, Cisco has released CUCM version 14 which we are going to look into it and its features.

Latest release further extends Cisco Unified Communication Manager’s leadership through features that enrich user experiences, simplify administration workloads, enhanced security and enhanced business and operational insights through Cisco Webex Cloud Connected UC services

CUCM version 14 provides improved experience for users and administrators, including:

– Increased cluster capacity so that more devices can be supported without adding more resources

– Flexibility to move a registered phone from office to home without repeating the onboarding process

– Flexibility to move between Wi-Fi and LTE networks without dropping an existing call

– Cisco WebEx apps

– Operational workflow simplification by managing all certificates from a single portal

In Cisco Unified Communication Manager numerous features exist. call persistency – LTE to Wi-Fi support enables flexibility for users on the WebEx app to switch between networks without getting disconnected from active calls.

Also, by benefiting from MRA registration failover support, the WebEx app or Jabber can quickly detect any outage in the registration path if Cisco Expressway-E/C or CUCM is down and can re-register over a different Expressway-E/C path to CUCM. In this version UDS is enhanced to perform better discovery of the home cluster of a user across remote clusters.

This helps in avoiding the Cisco Jabber login failures and ensures geographical redundancy in the event of a data center failure or shutdown. AV1 codec which is supported in CUCM14, enables users joining meetings on low bandwidth to get same video quality as users with normal bandwidth.

With this release CUCM 14 is AV1 codec ready. A WebEx room device registered to CUCM can Cisco Jabber® IM&P high availability with zero down time Significantly reduces downtime for Jabber user during server failover, fallback, and upgrades which needs Cisco Jabber release 14. Furthermore, using CUCM 14 enables lower deployment cost through a 25 percent increase in cluster scale.

A standard cluster now supports registration of 50,000 devices, and a mega cluster supports registration of 100,000 devices. Extension Mobility cross-cluster (EMCC) scale enables enterprises to deploy EMCC for more users by supporting 7500 user logins.

The login rate is increased from 90 to 150 per minute on a 10,000-user OVA. PCD Release 14 is a configurable performance parameter to more efficiently handle deployments with a very high numbers of nodes, clusters, and/or tasks and provides usability improvements.

Release 14 has gone through Cisco’s CSDL process and is more secure in: administrative access security, application security, threat surface reduction, logging and auditing, web security (XSS, injection vulnerabilities), privacy and data security, vulnerability management and cryptographic support (X.509).

Analytics module in CUCM version 14 provides various data about WebEx Cloud-Connected UC analytics reports, Endpoint KPIs, headset KPIs, endpoint deployment distribution, headset deployment distribution, Call quality, call status, Call count, call duration, endpoint utilization, headset utilization and CPU utilization, memory utilization, disk utilization, cluster and node availability.

CUCM 14 License

All Cisco CUCM features can be activated by using Cisco Smart Licenses which provides centralized license purchasing and management. All product instances would be activated after device registration on the Cisco smart software management website after purchasing the proper license with a smart account.

Also CUCM 14 PLR licenses can be applied by using the smart license reservation features included in the CLI environments. Cisco PLR license can register all instances permanently and without any connection to the Internet. For enabling license reservation feature follow below steps:

1- First login into the CUCM CLI.

2- Second, enter the below command:

Admin: license smart reservation enable

3- Then you should see license registration status in the web interface.

CUCM 14 License

CUCM 14 License

4- Again in the CLI enter the following command to generate the request code

Admin: license smart reservation request

5- Then copy the code and send it for the Cisco’s partner and receive the authorization code

Admin: license smart reservation return- authorization [RECEIVED CODE]

6- At the end all product instances would be activated completely and permanently.
